Planning for a Fossil / Shark Tooth Hunting Excursion
Please remember to bring the following.
A pair of shoes you don’t mind taking in the river (water shoes or an old pair of sneakers work fine)
Food and snacks
Drinks (bring plenty of water!)
Towels and dry clothing
Sunscreen and bug repellant
Please dress for the occasion. A bathing suit, shorts, hat, UV long-sleeve shirt, or wetsuit (Dec-Feb) are all good options.
We offer chartered fossil hunting tours for families, groups, and individuals interested in discovering and collecting fossils. The excursions are led by master captains who will take you to the best-hunting sites along the ancient riverbed and share their knowledge and expertise on the fossils you may find.
All the necessary fossil hunting tools and equipment are provided! Don’t worry about the gear. We have it all on-site. So, sit back and enjoy the ride in our state-of-the-art, custom-built Jon boats designed specifically for navigating the shallow waters of the Peace River.
What will you discover?
The Peace River region of Florida is home to one of the most important fossil deposits in the world. Fossils in this region range from the Miocene Epoch (about 23 million years ago) to the Pleistocene (about 10,000 years ago). The fossils found here include those of the extinct megafauna (giant mammals), such as mastodons, mammoths, and giant sloths, and extinct animals like saber-toothed cats, dire wolves, and armadillos along with a dozen species of shark teeth and the sought-after megalodon tooth. There have also been fossils of early humans and their stone tools found in the area.
